THE HOME EFFICIENCY REBATE INITIATIVE

Homeowners across Ontario are eligible for up to $5,000 of home renovation rebates through the Home Efficiency Rebate initiative. Both Enbridge Gas and Union Gas customers with an existing natural gas furnace/boiler as your main heat source are able to claim these rebates, making it more affordable for homeowners to improve their home's energy efficiency. Rebates are available for customers who improve their home's: air sealing, attic insulation, Basement/crawlspace insulation, Exterior wall insulation, water heater, furnace, boiler, doors, windows, and/or skylights.

How Do I Know if I am Eligible for Rebates?

In order to become eligible and receive a rebate from the Home Efficiency Rebate initiative, you are required to:

  • Are an active Union Gas or Enbridge customer with an existing natural gas furnace/boiler as your main heat source
  • Own a semi-detached, detached, row townhouse, or mobile home
  • Complete a pre- and post-work energy audit within 120 days of each other
  • Complete at least two eligible energy upgrade renovations. Furnace upgrades require two additional measures to be eligible
  • Provide copies of all receipts for energy upgrades.

WHAT DOES THE REBATE QUALIFICATION PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

Two separate energy audits are needed to qualify a homeowner for Home Efficiency Rebates. One before any renovations have begun and one right after all of the renovations are completed. The common way for a homeowner to receive a rebate is as such:

  1. Get in touch with an approved Service Organization (such as Barrier Sciences) that has registered energy advisors (such as Goldeye Home Inspection) which can conduct both a pre-renovation energy audit and a post-renovation energy audit which is done within 120 days of each other.
  2. Use the information provided in the energy audit to pick a minimum of two applicable home improvements (the information provided from the energy audit and energy advisor will aid you in choosing the most cost-effective option). Furnace upgrades require two additional measures to be eligible.
  3. Have a reputable and professional contractor perform all of your chosen renovations.
  4. Have the energy advisor conduct a post-renovation energy audit to check the performance of the new improvements, and submit all the necessary paperwork.
  5. After about 60 days, check the mail for your rebate cheque.

How Do I Know Which Home Improvements are the Best?

Choosing the right home renovations can be tough. But with the pre-renovation energy audit that is part of the Home Efficiency Rebate qualification process, it is actually quite easy. With an energy audit (aka an energy assessment), homeowners receive an in-depth look at how their home is performing, along with a list of suggestions for how it is able to be most cost-effectively improved.

The energy advisor who conducts your assessment will clearly lay out all of your home’s renovation options, including the expected utility bill and energy savings that are specific to each of your home’s possible improvements. They will also rank all of your home’s renovation options in terms of their cost-effectiveness, allowing you to target the areas of your home that can be most significantly improved for the lowest upfront cost.

Contact us today for assistance to setup your free phone consultation service and schedule a time for your pre-renovation energy audit; or to talk with one of our registered energy advisors (such as Goldeye Home Inspection) about your home renovation and rebate options.

  • Steve did a home inspection for us in Winnipeg prior to his move to Guelph. Steve showed up on time as promised, explained what he was going to do, and was able to answer all of our questions. He pointed out a few small things we could do to preempt concerns from potential home buyers, provided a verbal summary prior to departing, and an exhaustive written report via email shortly after his visit. We highly recommend Goldeye Home Inspection!

  • Steve did a building inspection of my home late last year. He was very thorough. He identified areas of concern I wasn't aware of and outlined a list of things that needed to be done, basically in order of importance. The timing was good because I had time to do the most necessary things before winter. The report was detailed and clear. He also did an infra-red light analysis of my home which showed where the possible moisture or heat escaping areas were. Very interesting and useful, particularly.
